Prompt #8: Hands-on Sports Operations

Experiencing how to run a basketball program is a unique experience that I am fortunate enough to be exposed to. There are countless aspects to the process of running a basketball organization that seem to go unnoticed, but are completely necessary. The Director of Basketball Operations is a tough job. The position is required to organize the basic necessities that are needed day in and day out. Prior to exploring this position, I was expecting something a little different.

There are duties with the job that you wouldn't think would be necessary work for the position. During the off-season, the job requires you to direct basketball camps and schedules, contacting other  schools and tournament officials for potential games, and conferences. Along with the other little preparatory jobs for the upcoming season, these are the main ones. During the season, it gets a little more hectic. Director of Sports Operations is reliant on creating logistic plans, (where the team will stay, how will they get there, how long will they be there). During the games they are also required to take official stats on the game, while being in the coaches ear telling him important stats that they might not notice.

Seeing first hand how these programs run was huge for me. I learned that everything you see and hear about running a basketball program isn't all true. There are many little things needed to be done that are necessary for the big things to work out. The truth is there is more work needed to be done that goes unnoticed in order for a program to be successful.
